A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that conditions a space without requiring any ductwork. Every standard central HVAC system moves air through a network of ducts running through your walls, attic, or crawlspace. Mini-splits skip that entirely. Instead, a small outdoor compressor unit connects directly to one or more indoor air handlers through a narrow conduit containing a refrigerant line, a power cable, and a condensate drain line. The conduit requires only a small hole through an exterior wall, usually three inches in diameter.

Because they operate as heat pumps, most ductless mini-split systems both cool in summer and heat in winter, making them a complete year-round comfort solution. They are controlled by remote, wall control, or smartphone app, and each indoor unit can be set to a different temperature independently.

A multi-zone system uses one outdoor unit to run multiple indoor air handlers, each in a different room or zone. Depending on the system, you can connect two to eight indoor units to a single outdoor compressor. Each zone has independent temperature control, so one family member can keep a bedroom at 68 degrees while another keeps the living room at 72.

Like any HVAC equipment, ductless mini-splits perform better and last longer with regular maintenance. A well-maintained mini-split system lasts 15 to 20 years. A neglected one may need major component repairs within 7 to 10 years.
